Baby Teeth: The Importance Of Children's Dentistry

As a young mother, I was reasonably ignorant when raising my firstborn. My biggest regret is that I didn't help her take better care of her teeth. Like many people, I didn't realise the importance of baby teeth, resulting in long-term dental problems. Recently, my daughter got married and some of my tears were for the beautiful, glistening smile she presented to the cameras. Ever since I realised the dental damage I had caused, I had been saving for my daughter to have cosmetic dentistry. The results are remarkable. During the course of this journey, I have learnt a lot about caring for children's teeth and corrective procedures that can be undertaken when issues arise. I am sure many of you would be interested in the latest knowledge and techniques that are available to prevent and repair dental complications. I'm Margret Devlin - thanks for visiting.

Do Banana Skins Really Make Your Teeth Whiter?

Dentist Blog

If you're researching natural ways to whiten your teeth, you may come across evidence that rubbing banana skins on your teeth can help brighten them up. But can a simple banana make your teeth whiter?

The Advantages of a Banana Skin Rub

Bananas are rich in tooth-friendly minerals such as potassium, manganese and magnesium, especially when they are ripe. The skin of a banana can help transfer these minerals to your teeth and also has a non-abrasive exfoliating action that may help make your teeth look whiter.

When you rub your teeth with the inside of a piece of banana skin, it may rub away residue and surface stains. It may also add minerals to your teeth that may make them stronger. According to kidspot, some people find this process to be just as effective as using commercial whitening products.

If you don't want to pay for treatments or prefer a natural solution, this may be an alternative worth trying. Rubbing your teeth with the inside of a banana skin doesn't have the potential for enamel damage that other home remedies that use abrasive substances, such as baking soda, may bring and it doesn't involve the use of any harmful chemicals.

The Disadvantages of a Banana Skin Rub

The effects of a banana may not be enough to really whiten your smile. While a little gentle exfoliation and application of useful nutrients may remove minor staining and help keep your teeth cleaner, it has no bleaching properties and is not likely to make a difference on older stains or those that are harder to remove. It also won't have any effect on internal staining or discolouration

While there isn't much damage you can do with a banana skin on your teeth, you do need to be aware of the fact that the skin contains some natural sugars. This is not a solution that you should use more than once a day or once every few days to avoid putting sugars on your teeth.

The Proof of the Pudding Is in the Rubbing

According to kidspot, the evidence for the effectiveness of banana skins on the teeth is anecdotal rather than scientific. Some people feel that this works; others don't see any difference. If you are curious, the site recommends trying the process for yourself for a few days, taking photos of your teeth before and after to see if you notice a difference.

To get the best effects, try the following tips:

  • Make sure that the banana is ripe so that the skin contains as much good stuff as possible. Unripe bananas may not contain enough minerals to make a difference.
  • Peel the banana from the bottom rather than the top. Peeling upside down is more likely to leave the fruit's fibrous strings on the skin. These may help with the cleaning process.
  • Take a thin strip of peel and rub the white inside of it all over your teeth.
  • Leave the banana residue on your teeth for ten minutes or so before brushing your teeth and rinsing.
