Baby Teeth: The Importance Of Children's Dentistry

As a young mother, I was reasonably ignorant when raising my firstborn. My biggest regret is that I didn't help her take better care of her teeth. Like many people, I didn't realise the importance of baby teeth, resulting in long-term dental problems. Recently, my daughter got married and some of my tears were for the beautiful, glistening smile she presented to the cameras. Ever since I realised the dental damage I had caused, I had been saving for my daughter to have cosmetic dentistry. The results are remarkable. During the course of this journey, I have learnt a lot about caring for children's teeth and corrective procedures that can be undertaken when issues arise. I am sure many of you would be interested in the latest knowledge and techniques that are available to prevent and repair dental complications. I'm Margret Devlin - thanks for visiting.

Treatments Offered By An Orthodontist

An orthodontist is a specially trained dentist that deals with dental irregularities such as misaligned jaws and teeth. Anyone may need the services offered by orthodontists depending on the dental issue. For instance, children may need spacing out of the teeth to ensure they are aligned when growing while adults may need alignment of their teeth in order correct the appearance of their smile. The most common treatment involves using traditional braces to correct the positioning of the teeth. However, there are other lesser known forms of treatment that you may require if you are planning on visiting an orthodontist. They include, Limited Treatment, Invisible Braces, Two-Phase Treatment.

  1. Limited Treatment – An orthodontist may evaluate your case and offer a partial treatment that does require wearing braces. Only a few teeth may need to be repaired. This kind of treatments deals with specific areas of the mouth thus takes a shorter time and fewer equipment to administer. Limited treatment may also be required to offer other dental treatments such as implants.
  2. Invisalign Braces – These are removable trays custom made for your teeth. They are designed to slightly adjust teeth every time you get a new set. Different sets are required depending on the stage of your treatment. The biggest advantage of using invisalign braces is that you can maintain oral health as they can be removed when eating or brushing teeth. Oral health is key in ensuring that treatment takes its due course. Some patients want to be less noticeable when wearing braces and an Orthodontist may use invisalign braces to serve this purpose.
  3. Two-Phase Treatment – This treatment is administered to children. It is very crucial to ensure that children grow up with straight teeth and well-adjusted jaws. An orthodontist starts this treatment when a child is still young. This offers a great chance in ensuring that dental issues are picked up early and treatment is started. It keeps track of growing teeth from baby teeth which is the first phase through to permanent ones that is the second phase. Carrying out tests when there are still baby teeth present lays ground for treatments as the child grows. If any issues present themselves, an orthodontist will choose when to start and continue required treatment that may correct issues dealing with spacing of teeth and how a child bites. As children go through the adolescent stage, they are healthy and more confident.
