As a young mother, I was reasonably ignorant when raising my firstborn. My biggest regret is that I didn't help her take better care of her teeth. Like many people, I didn't realise the importance of baby teeth, resulting in long-term dental problems. Recently, my daughter got married and some of my tears were for the beautiful, glistening smile she presented to the cameras. Ever since I realised the dental damage I had caused, I had been saving for my daughter to have cosmetic dentistry. The results are remarkable. During the course of this journey, I have learnt a lot about caring for children's teeth and corrective procedures that can be undertaken when issues arise. I am sure many of you would be interested in the latest knowledge and techniques that are available to prevent and repair dental complications. I'm Margret Devlin - thanks for visiting.
If you struggle with bad breath, then you may want to suspect factors other than the obvious gum disease. Remember that some health conditions are predisposing factors of bad breath, such as chronic acid reflux. These health conditions increase the likelihood that you will suffer from halitosis. Below are tips you can use to better understand and deal with medical conditions that could cause halitosis/bad breath.
Consider diabetes as a risk factor of halitosis
Poor blood circulation and a high level of sugars―mainly glucose―in the mouth are triggers of bad breath. Diabetes is an ailment that increases the amount of glucose in your mouth. The high amount of glucose encourages the growth of bacteria that cause bad breath.
Also, diabetes is known to damage the normal function of blood vessels, and in turn can cause poor blood circulation in your mouth. If your gums fail to get ample blood supply, your gums can weaken and become prone to bacteria attack that eventually triggers halitosis.
If you're suffering from diabetes and you experience bad breath often, then it's advisable that you observe necessary preventive measures. For instance, it's advisable that you chew sugar-free bubble gum. Chewing promotes the production of saliva that prevents bacteria buildup and promotes good blood circulation in your mouth.
Understand the link between GERD and bad breath
GERD is a gastrointestinal disease that is evident from reflux or regurgitation of stomach contents. This condition is a known cause of bad breath, mainly because of the presence of stomach content in the mouth.
You can tell whether you're suffering from GERD if you experience heartburn often and a sour taste in the mouth. So, if you suffer from GERD, then it's necessary that you be cautious and prevent the occurrence of halitosis.
For instance, you may want to avoid foods or ingredients with a strong, pungent smell, such as garlic, onions, and spicy foods. However, if avoiding these foods completely is not feasible, you can opt to at least lessen the amount of these foods you consume. Also, you should consider eating small, frequent meals instead of large meals. Eating small meals lessens the probability of acid reflux.
Go for dental check-ups: Don't forget that ensuring you visit a dental clinic regularly is important in your fight against halitosis. Remember that your dentist can identify early signs of halitosis and advise you on how to prevent the occurrence of this condition in good time.
Halitosis is a dental condition that results from various issues, some of which are not so obvious.
