As a young mother, I was reasonably ignorant when raising my firstborn. My biggest regret is that I didn't help her take better care of her teeth. Like many people, I didn't realise the importance of baby teeth, resulting in long-term dental problems. Recently, my daughter got married and some of my tears were for the beautiful, glistening smile she presented to the cameras. Ever since I realised the dental damage I had caused, I had been saving for my daughter to have cosmetic dentistry. The results are remarkable. During the course of this journey, I have learnt a lot about caring for children's teeth and corrective procedures that can be undertaken when issues arise. I am sure many of you would be interested in the latest knowledge and techniques that are available to prevent and repair dental complications. I'm Margret Devlin - thanks for visiting.
Team sports are great for children and recommended by many experts. They teach teamwork, friendship, and build social skill overall. But, some would say unfortunately, most popular team sports in Australia are high-impact sports, meaning that during play, the body is exposed to frequent physical trauma. This is particularly hazardous to younger children, as they aren't used to falling properly, for example, and are much more likely to hit their heads than a professional. Therefore, whether your child is about to play their first proper game of footy, basketball, or rugby, there are some special considerations that are important to take before your child begins playing high-impact sports. So, what are some things you need to do before this significant developmental milestone?
Invest in a High-Quality Mouthguard
The health of a person's teeth is not only an important part of their facial aesthetics, it's also an indicator of things like their social-economic status and overall health. Because of this, it is very important to take care of your child's teeth. Not to mention the winging and dentist's bill you'll have to put up with if something goes wrong. Although mouth guards are often mandatory in Australian contact sports, it might be worth passing on the cheap grocery store mouth guards. Most dentists offer custom professionally fitted mouth guards, which will allow you to send your child out to play with a free conscience.
Get the Right Shoes
No one wants to watch their child slipping around on wet grass because they forgot to get them some specialised shoes. Playing basketball requires wide shoes with soles that are completely flat and made of rubber, to allow for high traction between the player's foot and the basketball court's surface. Soccer, ruby, and football require studs to minimise slipping by digging into wet or generally slippery ovals, and each has a specialised design, ideal for their respective type of ball.
Get Them to Watch Some Games
No one likes being the new kid who doesn't know the rules, and gets treated like an imbecile until learning them. Kids can be mean, so you should do your best to make sure your child enjoys playing sports, as if you succeed, you'll be greatly increasing the chances of them being a fitter, happier, and healthier person, building good habits that will last a lifetime. So to teach your child the rules of a sport they're starting, you can practice with them, or get them to watch some games on TV or online, and be there to answer their questions. Not to mention, people naturally learn from watching sports, so your child will not only learn the rules, but also how to avoid injury like the professionals.
