As a young mother, I was reasonably ignorant when raising my firstborn. My biggest regret is that I didn't help her take better care of her teeth. Like many people, I didn't realise the importance of baby teeth, resulting in long-term dental problems. Recently, my daughter got married and some of my tears were for the beautiful, glistening smile she presented to the cameras. Ever since I realised the dental damage I had caused, I had been saving for my daughter to have cosmetic dentistry. The results are remarkable. During the course of this journey, I have learnt a lot about caring for children's teeth and corrective procedures that can be undertaken when issues arise. I am sure many of you would be interested in the latest knowledge and techniques that are available to prevent and repair dental complications. I'm Margret Devlin - thanks for visiting.
It is not uncommon for you to lose your permanent teeth through an accident, sports injury or even dental disease. Teeth help you chew, speak, maintain the shape of your face and even improve your smile. That is why you need to replace the missing teeth with artificial ones.
When you visit your prosthodontist, he or she may recommend dental implants because they give the best results and are low-maintenance. The dentist may also mention other treatments like dentures and dental bridges to make you aware of your options. Here is everything you need to know about dental implants.
Are You a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?
Prosthodontists will not recommend dental implants if they know that you are not a good candidate. What does this mean? Dental implant installation requires surgery, meaning your body needs to be healthy enough to withstand surgery. Your bones must also be strong enough to handle drilling without crumbling or cracking and be able to heal after the installation of dental implants. These are the main reasons why dentures are recommended for older people, while dental implants are recommended for younger individuals.
What Can You Expect If You Choose Dental Implants?
The dental implant procedure is done in two stages. The first stage is surgery, where a hole is drilled into your jawbone and a dental implant screwed inside; you need a dental implant for each missing tooth. The dental implant acts as a root for the artificial dental crown that is attached during the second stage.
Traditionally, dental implant procedures required two surgeries. This is because the dental surgeon needed to sew your gum over the dental implant during the first surgery. Nowadays, only one surgery is required because a cover can typically be installed on the dental implant during the first surgery to allow the gum to heal around it.
During the second stage of the process, the cover is removed and a dental crown attached. You may, however, need healing time between the two stages. Healing can take between two to five weeks, depending on how quickly your body heals. Time is required for your jawbone to fuse with the dental implant and your gum to heal around the dental implant cover.
Dental Implants Are Expensive!
If you are planning on getting dental implants, know that they are expensive. This is because they utilise titanium metal, require surgery, are durable, have low maintenance and give the best results. You can even mistake them for well-kept natural teeth. Ensure you save up or utilise your dental insurance.
