As a young mother, I was reasonably ignorant when raising my firstborn. My biggest regret is that I didn't help her take better care of her teeth. Like many people, I didn't realise the importance of baby teeth, resulting in long-term dental problems. Recently, my daughter got married and some of my tears were for the beautiful, glistening smile she presented to the cameras. Ever since I realised the dental damage I had caused, I had been saving for my daughter to have cosmetic dentistry. The results are remarkable. During the course of this journey, I have learnt a lot about caring for children's teeth and corrective procedures that can be undertaken when issues arise. I am sure many of you would be interested in the latest knowledge and techniques that are available to prevent and repair dental complications. I'm Margret Devlin - thanks for visiting.
Dental implants are an ideal solution to missing teeth, allowing people to eat, smile, and carry on with a normal oral hygiene routine as if they had a full set of natural teeth. However, the invasive dental implant fitting process puts many people off getting implants, which means that they miss out on the benefits. If you have a dental phobia, dental implants might seem like an impossible dream, but the right dentist could make it happen for you.
Get the Facts
In addition to fearing the implant fitting process, many people worry about the possibility of their dental implants failing and needing to be removed. Rest assured that dental implant failure is very rare and usually occurs when people don't follow their dentist's instructions during the recovery period. By giving up smoking, avoiding alcohol during recovery, and keeping your new implants clean in line with your dentist's instructions, you can give your implants an extremely good chance of succeeding.
Think Long Term
The great thing about dental implants is that they are permanent. Once they are in place, most people do not need any more invasive procedures, only regular dental checkups to ensure their gums stay healthy. Even if you break one of your dental implants, a dentist can make a new crown and fit it to the protruding part of the implant post without needing to open up the gum again. If your phobia makes it difficult for you to go to the dentist, then implants could be a better long-term solution for you than dentures, which require regular adjustment.
Choose Sedation Dentistry
While some people can get dental implants fitted using only nitrous oxide and a local anaesthetic, for those with a dental phobia, IV sedation is likely to be a better option. This type of sedation is delivered through a line in your arm and makes you feel calm and sleepy throughout the procedure. Most people say that time seems to pass very quickly during IV sedation, which is ideal if you are having multiple implants fitted.
Talk to Your Dentist
Good dentists are sympathetic to people who suffer from dental phobias. They should take the time to discuss your options with you and answer any questions you have to help you feel less nervous about the upcoming procedure. Rather than assuming dental implants are off-limits to you, why not schedule an appointment today to find out more?
